How to set up Multi-Factor Authentication for a Microsoft 365 Account?
Passwords are the most common method of authenticating a sign-in to a computer or online service, but they are also the most vulnerable. To provide an additional level of security for sign-ins, an additional verification method is required. Please follow the guide below to setup Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone.
If you have changed phones or devices, please contact the helpdesk to reset your account. This will allow you to set up Microsoft Authenticator again and ensure your access remains secure.
You will need:
- A PC with internet access
- Your mobile device
- Your email address and password
Instructions on how to setup MFA for your Microsoft 365 Account:
- Navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup in a web browser on a computer (this can be done in or out of the school)
- Enter your school email address and press Next
- Enter your school email password and press Next
- If prompted to "Stay signed in", please press Yes
- You will be prompted for "More information required", please click Next
- You will now be prompted to install the Microsoft Authenticator app, please do this on your mobile device and then click Next

- On your device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app, if prompted to enable/allow notifications, please do so. Then click Next

- When presented with a QR code on the computer, tap Scan a QR code within the Authenticator App on your mobile device and scan it.
If you already have the Microsoft Authenticator App installed: Tap the + icon in the top right corner, select "Work or school account" and then "Scan QR code".
- Once the code has been scanned, click Next on the PC.
If you see an "App lock enabled" prompt, press OK to dismiss it.
- You will now be sent a test notification which you will need to approve on your mobile device. Once approved, click Next

- Next, click Done to complete this step of the process.

- You will be directed to the Security Info page, please click + Add sign-in method
- You will also need to provide a second method of authentication. Please select Phone and click Add

- Change the country/location to United Kingdom (+44), enter your mobile phone number, select Text me a code or Call me and then press Next

- You will be prompted to enter a code, you will either receive this via text or via phone call, please enter this and press Next

- You will see a prompt saying your phone was registered successfully. Press Done to complete the process.
